Commercial Tutoring Services
We are aware of individuals from private tutoring companies recruiting students into paid tutoring sessions and group chats this fall. These companies are not connected with the University of Toronto. While tutoring can be a helpful form of academic support, some forms of tutoring are unauthorized and can lead to issues related to academic discipline, like a grade reduction or a suspension. A good tutor will help you improve your understanding of the subject area by giving you the tools you need to be successful — without giving you the answers! Read your course syllabus carefully to help you understand what forms of academic support are and aren’t acceptable. Unacceptable tutoring practices can include:
- Collaborating with others, or sharing assessed answers, on messaging apps or social media.
- Having someone help you complete all or part of your essay/homework/problem set, whether or not you are paying for the service.
- Drafting your schoolwork in one language and using a translation service or tutor to translate it into English.
